Frequently asked questions

Being in a new environment can be nerve wracking.  Especially one that will be your home for the next year or two. Here you will find some answers to many asked questions.  This list will be updated regularly.

What happens during exam period at the hall?

During end-of-semester exams, William Marsden Hall enters Exam Mode. This means:

Quiet hours apply 24/7
Alcohol is not permitted anywhere in the hall
Floor 1 becomes a silent study space

This helps create a calm, focused environment for everyone preparing for exams.

Are there penalties for breaking exam period rules?

Yes. The hall takes the exam environment seriously.

First breach: $50 fine
Second breach: $100 fine
Third breach: removal from the hall after your final exam (Semester Two only)

What is “Coffee & Kai” during exams?

Coffee & Kai is a relaxed evening study break provided during exam weeks.
When: Weeknights, 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Where: Dining Hall
Run by: RAs and hall staff

You can help yourself to toast, spreads, tea, coffee and cold drinks. If anything runs out, just let an RA know.

Can I have guests stay at the hall?

Yes, you’re welcome to have guests visit your room.
However, guests are not permitted in the dining hall.  You should escort your guest from the entrance to your room and back again when they leave.

While they’re in the hall, your guest’s actions are considered your responsibility. Think of them as your “hall twin” — what they do reflects on you.

Guests can be signed in at reception in line with hall policy.

Is there a hall Facebook group?

Yes. Each year the hall creates an official resident Facebook group for announcements, updates, and events. Make sure you find it and request to join.

Will my floor have a group chat?

Most floors create their own group chats. These are great for quick updates, organising plans, or asking if anyone has spare milk at 10 pm.

Does William Marsden Hall have a mascot?

Duh doi! We do indeed!

  • Our mascot is An Astronaut.

Does William Marsden Hall engage in cross-Hall prank wars?

We absolutely do not and discourage such behaviour.

  • It is forbidden to steal rival halls' toilet paper rolls and hide them in the dumpsters located in the janitorial area at the rear of the premises to the left of the bike stands.

  • We also discourage students from filling the water fountain at a rival hall with washing powder which can be purchased from the vending machines in the laundry rooms or at a discounted price at neighbouring stores with your current campus card. This list can be found in your Halls welcome pack.

Where do I put rubbish and recycling?

  • Glass and paper recycling bins are available in the common room

  • A general rubbish bin is also provided and emptied daily
