About The Halls
Congratulations! If you've reached this page, then you'll have realised that William Marsden Hall isn't a real place.
The Halls is a fictional New Zealand university drama series set in Bill Mars Hall, a hall of residence within a fictional Auckland university, where friendships, rivalries, identity, and love collide across the course of a semester.
What began as a small set of stories created to help a group of students laugh at themselves has grown into a character-driven series about life inside a hall of residence — the routines, the pressure, the late-night conversations, and the moments that quietly change everything. The original idea was first imagined decades earlier in a different city at a hall called William Marsden House — a name that lives on as Bill Mars Hall.
At its core, The Halls is about people finding themselves while living on top of each other. It explores what happens when very different personalities are thrown together in a shared space where there’s no real escape — where small moments matter, tensions build, and chosen family forms in unexpected ways.
Grounded in a New Zealand setting and written with a New Adult crossover tone, the series follows a core group of students as they navigate study, identity, relationships, and the pressure of becoming who they are meant to be.
All characters are fictional, and any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.
University: 30% study, 70% drama.

The music that helped build the series
Music plays a major role in every day life.
For The Halls, having it playing in the background motivated and shaped scenes and chapters.
We delve into the characters' psyches through music. Even Noah's father's favourite song from his favourite artist makes an appearance.
"I love living at Bill Mars. I've learnt so much. Who the cool people are, who to avoid. So much goes on here."
